From idea to MVP in 8 weeks: a practical roadmap
A week-by-week plan we use to take founders from a napkin sketch to a product real users can try.
An MVP (minimum viable product) isn't a smaller version of your final product — it's the fastest way to learn whether people want it. Here's the roadmap we follow to get there in about eight weeks.
Weeks 1–2: Discovery and design
- Define the one problem the MVP must solve and who it's for.
- Map the core user journey — usually 5 to 10 screens.
- Create a clickable prototype and test it with 5 potential users.
- Choose the tech stack and plan the architecture for growth.
Weeks 3–6: Build in sprints
Development runs in one- or two-week sprints. At the end of each sprint you get a working demo, so feedback shapes the product while it's being built rather than after.
Week 7: Test and harden
QA, performance checks, security basics, analytics and crash reporting. Skipping this step is the most common reason launches go badly.
Week 8: Launch and learn
Release to a first group of users, watch the data, talk to them, and prioritise the next iteration. The MVP has done its job when you know what to build next — and what not to.
What to leave out
- Complex admin dashboards (a simple one is enough)
- Every payment method
- Multiple languages
- Features no user has asked for yet
