10 questions to ask before you hire a software company

The right partner can make your product; the wrong one can sink it. Use these questions to tell them apart.

Choosing a development partner is one of the most important decisions for any digital product. Portfolios and price matter, but the answers to these questions reveal far more.

  • Can I see work similar to my project, and speak to a past client?
  • Who exactly will work on my project, and will they change midway?
  • How often will I see working software?
  • How do you handle changes in scope?
  • What does your testing and QA process look like?
  • How do you keep my data and code secure?
  • Who owns the source code and IP at the end?
  • What happens after launch — support, bugs, updates?
  • What tools will we use to communicate and track progress?
  • What would make you say no to a project?

Pay attention not just to the answers but to how openly they're given. A partner who is transparent before the contract is far more likely to be transparent during the project.
